BIRSTALL Victoria dominated the local derby, overcoming Thornhill Trojans A 44-10 at Overthorpe Park in the Yorkshire Men’s League Division Four.
Victoria’s debutant centre and man of the match Will Brooke who went close after 13 minutes was followed by full-back Mick Dyson who thought he had scored a try, only to be held up over the line.
But on 18 minutes Thornhill’s defence finally caved in and Birstall took the lead through a Brenden Sheridan try.
The away side were on the front foot again shortly afterwards when prop Matthew Ginnelly set up Dean Carr who went over in the corner.
Three further first-half tries followed, the first of which was scored by Dyson, but Thornhill responded to narrow their deficit through Vinny Johnson who barged his way over.
Birstall had the final say of the half, however, Will Brooke the man touching down for the visitors to give his side a comfortable 22-4 lead.
Nothing much changed after half-time, Birstall scoring a try through substitute Tony Aubrey.
This was followed by a Matthew Smith try on 70 minutes. But Richard Llewelyn salvaged some pride for the hosts to reduce the scores to 32-10.
In an eventful final few minutes Brooke went over twice to complete an unlikely hat-trick with Dyson converting to make it six from eight on the day, rounding off the scoring at 44-10.
Birstall Victoria’s next game is at home to table-toppers Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (Saturday June 18, 2.30pm).
