Town defender bullish about promotion hopes

TOWERING centreback Jamie McCombe feels Huddersfield Town’s revamped side is already gelling into a credible promotion force.
The toughtackling 6ft 5in defender impressed in away wins at Notts County in the league and Carlisle in the Carling Cup.
He is now primed for his home debut against Tranmere tomorrow (Saturday) and believes a third win in a week will see Town on a roll.
McCombe, 27, signed from Championship side Bristol City, said: “We wanted to make a strong start. It helps everyone settle in quickly.
“At Notts County everybody played well together. We weren’t happy with our performance at Carlisle but we ground out a good result.”
McCombe, brother of exTown player John, is one of several players to sign for Huddersfield over the summer from clubs in higher divisions.
The most notable recruits are former Rangers and Everton leftback Gary Naysmith and exAston Villa and Wolves playmaker Joey Gudjonsson.
Boss Lee Clark hopes some Premier League nous helps what is still a young side shake off last season’s playoff semifinal heartache against Millwall.
McCombe is confident Clark has got the blend right and added: “I wouldn’t have come here if I wasn’t convinced the team can win promotion.
“I was in a successful side at Bristol City and I want that again. It’s all in place. The manager and chairman are ambitious and the players are hungry.
“The stadium is great and the crowds have for a long time been better than many in the Championship. Everything here is ready for takeoff.”
Clark is likely to stick with McCombe at the heart of an unchanged team for Tranmere’s visit. But there now is strong competition in every position.
Cult hero Lee Novak is pushing loan signing Joe Garner for a start while new boys Lee Croft and Graham Carey are vying for a wide berth.
Huddersfield Town Supporters Association (HTSA) are running a coach to Peterborough next Saturday (August 21).
The coach will leave the stadium at 10.30am and the price for members is £12. Non members can travel for an additional £2. To book call Sally on the travel line – 07926 165863.
