CAPTAIN Richard Piper’s hattrick guided Dave Harrison’s Cleckheaton side to their maiden bonuspoint victory of the season over Moorend visitors Morpeth.
The 3917 result, which saw the hosts up to eighth in the league ladder, came as Cleckheaton controlled matters from the outset despite some disruption.
Iain Gordon opened the scoring on five minutes, with the boot, following a penalty.
Dramatically, from there, play was paused for close to an hour as an injured Morpeth played received medical attention following a collision with a teammate.
However from the resumption, Cleckheaton maintained focus and composure, as Piper bagged the game’s first try almost immediately, his first of a threetry haul.
Piper went onto complete his hattrick shortly after, Iain Gordon converting on both occasions.
Morpeth’s only reward, prior to the interval, came courtesy of a Tom Wilkinson touchdown.
Cleckheaton, who were reduced to 14 men late on following the sinbinning of Jonno Marshall, though, dominated the third quarter, wingman Martin Woodhead bagging himself a hattrick, which all but ended the tie as a contest.
Morpeth hit back through Ben Hornby and James Phillips, whose efforts proved in vain.
