Ruthless Vic pile on points

BIRSTALL VICTORIA recovered from a slow start to blow away visitors Airedale Cougars by 52-16 on Saturday.

The hosts were slow out of the blocks and allowed the Cougars to race in to an early 10-point lead with four tries in a 15-minute spell.

But the next 25 minutes of the first half saw a near faultless display from the Birstall, who posted five unanswered tries to take a commanding lead.

Very strong running from full-back Braden Hunter and prop Phil Hartley put the Vic on the front foot and the Birstall playmakers took full advantage.

Hooker Brendan Sheridan, loose-forward Ryan Jackson, scrum-half Tony Aubrey and stand-off Dean Arundel relished the field position gained and all were involved with some excellent tries.

Centre Ryan Ginnelly started the scoring on 17 minutes and he was followed over the whitewash by Sheridan soon after as he scored a great solo effort on 20 minutes.

Second-row Dave Dyson supported well to score on 25 minutes before more great support allowed Jackson to score under the posts with half-an-hour played.

But the pick of the tries was scored on 40 minutes by winger Scott Sheard with great hands from one touchline to the other allowed the wide man to score untouched in the corner.

The second half started with the Vic 28-10 in front, but after a series of penalties prop Matthew Gowland found himself in the sin-bin for holding down in the tackle and only minutes later Airedale scored their third try of the game, taking the score to 28-16 with 30 minutes to go.

Gowland returned from the sin-bin and with his first touch received an inside pass from Sheridan to score and quash any chance of an Airedale comeback.

The home team hit top gear again and further second-half tries were added by Aubrey on 65 minutes, in-form Sheridan added his second on 71 minutes and the scoring was completed by Arundel on 80 minutes with a great interception try taking the final score to 52-16.

Matthew Gowland converted eight goals from nine attempts and the joint man-of-the-match went to Ryan Jackson and Dean Arundel, with Braden Hunter a close third.

Birstall Victoria’s next game is away to Leeds Akkies on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
