Rams hold on to squad cash as Higgins snubs move

Dewsbury Rams boss Warren Jowitt says he is delighted with the squad he has assembled ahead of the new campaign despite missing out on the capture of Super League frontrower Liam Higgins.
The Press understands Higgins mutually agreed to leave Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last week but as turned down a move to the Tetley’s Stadium, claiming he only has eyes for fulltime rugby league.
Jowitt admitted Higgins would have been the finishing touch to his already impressive pack and the ‘icing on the cake’ as the Rams step up preparations for the Heavy Woollen derby, which is now less than one month away.
He said: “It would have been nice to have got Liam on board but it clearly wasn’t meant to be.
“I’m very happy with the squad we’ve got here and Liam’s signature would have been the icing on the cake.
“However, we’ll move on now. We have nothing to worry about and I believe we are covered in every position.
“I’m not really looking for any more players now, I’m going to sit back and work hard with the squad already in place.”
Following Higgins’ decision not to sign, the Rams are set to head into the new year with some space left on the budget.
Jowitt believes this approach could pay dividends as the season progresses.
“We haven’t got a huge amount of money left to spend but there is some and it leaves us in a good position.
“Anything could happen next year, which may mean we have to bring in another player.
“If anything crops up in the meantime then I’ll sure look into it but if there is one thing I have learned from last year, it’s that you don’t want to be bringing in large amounts of players, nor do you want to have let anyone go.
“The squad is very well balanced at this stage and it holds a good mix of experience.
“There is little we need to alter and preseason training is going very well so far.”
Meanwhile, the club have announced a new sponsor for 2012 in the shape of Birstallbased Yorkshire Building Services. The sponsors’ logo will appear on the rear of both of the Rams’ home and away shirts for the new season along with associate company Flair Handling Systems, which will feature on the players’ club clothing.
Chairman Mark Sawyer said: “It is vitally important for us that local companies get behind the Rams wherever possible.
“We are delighted that Yorkshire Building Services have recognised what we are trying to build and have decided to give us their support.”
