MORE than 30 players, including a few promising newcomers, turned up for pre-season training at Ossett RUFC.
Monday training will continue to be led by head coach Tom Sprott and Steve Dykes, with other sessions being taken by RFU development officer and former Rotherham player John Dudley.
Ex-England scrum-half Scott Benton will also continue to work with the Ossett backs.
For the next few weeks, training will be on the club’s Southdale pitch, with Thursday fitness sessions behind the bandstand in Wakefield park. All sessions start at 7pm. All players of all ages and abilities, including RL players, are welcome.
Entries for the club’s Ossett Brewery Trophy include Stocksbridge, Knaresborough and Leeds Corinthians. Ossett are away at Whitby in the first round of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy on August 30; and the following Saturday they host Wetherby in the first league game of the season.
Ossett’s veterans travel to Jersey for their annual 10-a-side trophy on the first weekend in October. The club usually take between 15 to 25 players to the island but any other players aged 35 or over are welcome.
Off the pitch, 20 club members took part in the Nat West Club Force Day, when the changing facilities were revamped.
Meanwhile, the club is working in partnership with its nominated charity the Teenage Cancer Trust. Members have been selling tickets for the Grand Summer Raffle, which will be drawn in late August.
On Saturday August 2, the club’s first Casino and Cocktail evening will be held at Dimple Well Lodge Hotel in Ossett. There will be croquet, canapes and drinks, a live band and professionally-manned casino tables.
Tickets are £15 and proceeds will be split between the club and the Teenage Cancer Trust.
