Neil's trophy success

BOWLER Neil Gomersal won the Willie Cleveland Trophy at Overthorpe Sports Club, beating Alex Wolfenden 2112 in the final.
The trophy, which began in 1971, is a singles competition which was originally played between bowlers from Overthorpe, Lees Holm and Thornhill is now contested annually on alternate greens between Overthorpe and Thornhill.
Gomersal had a tough route to the final, almost going out to Jordan Cossland in the first round having been 1710, 1914 and 2017 down, keeping his composure to finally go through.
He then fought off a tough challenge from Jordan Crabtree (2116), Steve Wainwright (2111) and Roy Blackburn (2119) before a controlled display shook off the challenge of Alex Wolfenden in a superb display.
Wolfenden beat Lilian Gray 2115 and Jonathan Peacock (217) before exacting revenge on previous singles conqueror Nathan Jewitt by 21 points to four and then beating his father David Jewitt by the comfortable margin of 219 in the semi final.
