Moorlands take advantage to go top

Mirfieldbased Moorlands CC took full advantage of Buttershaw’s surprise defeat at Methley A, and Carlton’s onewicket defeat at home to Batley, to go three points clear at the top of CYCL Division One by virtue of a 110run win at Oulton.
Once again the side batting first had the best of things as Moorlands ran up a total of 176 in 39.1 overs, with key knocks from Michael Rounding (51) and Chris Stott (48), before paceman Andrew Walker wrecked the home side with a 512 return.
Nadim Hussain (537) was the other wickettaker.
Skipper Tariq Hussain (351 and 12 not out) led Batley to the most remarkable result of the day after seeing his side on 45 chasing a total of 2189 at Carlton.
It looked all over for the Mount Pleasant men until Mohammed Arshad (71 ) and Kashif Talib (52 ) put on 101 for the sixth wicket and Batley edged home by one wicket with 2.3 overs to spare.
That win leaves Batley in fifth place, six points adrift of new leaders Moorlands and with a game in hand.
Fourthplaced Liversedge, without a game, also have a match in hand on the top three as just six points separate the top five.
Buttershaw St Pauls’ First Division promotion challenge suffered an unexpected setback when they lost by 69 runs in a 40over contest at Methley A.
While it is impossible to call the promotion race, the relegation from the Premier Division is less disputed.
Ossett, the fivewicket defeat at home to Wakefield Thornes their 14th from 14 games, looked doomed and Birstall are looking increasing likely to join them after a 56run defeat at New Farnley.
It was a case of ‘same story different opponents’ as Indian star Connor Williams hit 72 off 72 balls for Birstall, as they set about chasing 2223.
But noone else proved up to the task as they closed on 1666 – once again pointless and second from bottom in the Premier table.
