Lastgasp Buchanan try earns Rams a point

A last minute touchline conversion from scrumhalf Dominic Brambani secured the Dewsbury Rams a valuable point in a 3434 draw with Widnes.
The Rams were unrecognisable from their disappointing cup exit at the hands of lower division Swinton and came out firing in the opening minutes.
With just five minutes played the hosts were in, sending the Tetley’s Stadium into raptures.
Ayden Faal outjumped several Widnes defenders to catch a high Dom Brambani kick and plant it down. The provider turned converter with a cracking wideout kick.
With their tails up, the Rams camped themselves in the Widnes half and on 13 minutes the strong running Elliot Cosgrove tore into the heart of the Widnes defence and slipped a startling pass to Scott Turner to touch down.
Not finished yet Dewsbury won the ball from a scrum and Elliot Hodgson arrived on the end of the backs’ line to force his way over for a good try, Brambani adding the extras to make it 160. The Rams were in complete control.
However, Jowitt’s men either took their foot off the gas or the Vikings then finally sparked into life before it was too late.
Chaz I’Anson slid smoothly into the smallest of openings to glide over for a classic try converted by Steve Tyrer on 20 minutes.
Suddenly it was all Widnes. The powerful Magraff Leuluai hit the gap superbly from Thomas Coyle’s short pass and walked over by the posts, Tyrer converting on 25 minutes.
The visitors surged forward again with I’Anson stretching over again after great work by Ben Kavanagh close to the home line, Tyrer again converting on 31 minutes to give his side an 1816 lead.
Widnes were now on top with Kavanagh and Dave Allen leading the way and on the stroke of halftime the latter was sent over by the posts and Tyrer tagged on the extras.
The Rams got an early boost in the second half as Scott Turner supplied an electric burst up the touch line only to fall to a good Paddy Flynn tackle.
In response Allen shot clear but ignored his support and the chance was lost to some good covering by the Rams backs for whom Austin Buchanan was really on his toes.
Michael Wainwright, too, made ground each time he handled the ball and suddenly Dewsbury’s tenacity paid dividends as the effective Cosgrove was on hand to support Buchanan’s fine break and race in for Brambini to convert on 46 minutes.
On 51 minutes Brambani tested Kevin Penny and the speedster caught the ball and set off to run it back but suddenly lost the ball. It was picked up by the alert Cosgrove, who sent Brambani scampering over and the same player converted.
Nine minutes later Flynn took advantage of a slip by Hodgson to score close enough to the posts for Tyrer to convert and, tasting a victory, Widnes threw everything into  attack.
Again the high kick was worrying the Rams and Tyrer rose the highest to grab the ball and score an unconverted try to gain a 3428 lead.
It seemed as though it was all over and after racing into a three try lead, Dewsbury looked like another defeat was the cards.
However, Dewsbury surged up field and after one or two close shaves the Rams supporters went wild as the excellent Buchanan caught the ball superbly from Pat Walker’s inch perfect kick to score wide out.
Brambani held his nerve to slot over the touchline conversion.
