Inform Cleckheaton enjoy crucial victory

Cleckheaton are closing in on the top six after a 2619 victory over thirdplaced side Middlesbrough.
Confidence in the side is high and that was on show as they overcame the NorthEast club.
Middlesbrough opened the scoring through a Jack Bircham penalty but the visitors took a deserved lead on 20 minutes when Matt Piper got on the end of a terrific crossfield kick from Iain Gordon. Gordon was on hand to convert.
Cleckheaton began to dominate territory but it was Middlesbrough’s Bircham who reduced the arrears on the halfhour mark with another penalty goal.
However, on the stroke of halftime, Cleckheaton regained the ascendancy with a Richard Piper try, converted by Gordon.
An eventful second half began with a further unconverted try from Richard Piper but Middlesbrough responded on the hour through scrumhalf Peter Wright, who touched down.
The score was close and nerves were high when a serious injury to the home side’s backrower Gavin Fingland led to a lengthy pause for medical treatment.
When play resumed, Middlesbrough closed the gap to three points with an unconverted try but Cleckheaton showed character as they replied immediately.
Lee Queeley, fresh from the bench, powered over from close range and Gordon to converted as Cleckheaton sealed victory.
Bircham earned Middlesbrough a losing bonus point with a penalty in the last minute but Cleckheaton earned the plaudits with a spirited team performance.
