Fawkes is the guy as Sharks march on

Two tries from Shaw Cross loose forward Andrew Fawkes proved crucial as his side registered their third win in a row, 226 over Ovenden, to move up to third in the table.
It took 10 minutes before the Sharks’ inspirational fullback Pat ‘Rooster’ Foulstone opened the scoring with a lengthofthefield try, to which Glynn added the extras.
Both sets of forwards then battered each other up the middle of the field and it took two superb cover tackles from wingman Chalkie Bird to keep Ovenden from scoring.
Super League referee Jamie Leahy was the man in the middle and the game was played with great pace – but unfortunately there were a number of infringements which resulted in Sharks winger Wilby being sent from the field for an alleged use of the elbow after 30 minutes.
The Sharks were down to 12 men and Ovenden hit back on the stroke of halftime with a try and a goal.
The sides were tied at the break at 66 each but Shaw Cross dominated the second period.
Head coach Brett Turner and his assistant Steve Jones gave the Sharks an inspirational half time talk which tightened the team’s resolve.
The pack of Rourke, Talbot, Lee, Jones, Brummitt, Hudson, Lumb and Flemming paved the way for some classy play by the Sharks backs.
Andrew Fawkes was back to his best with a master display at loose forward and Danny Annakin, playing at centre once again, showed what a talented player he is with a manofthematch performance.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Fawkes went over for a try which was converted by Glynn.
The pressure on Ovenden continued and Glynn took two points after a penalty was awarded for reefing the ball.
Utility man Liam Brooke went over for his first try of the season and on the 78minute mark Fawkes intercepted a loose pass and showed pace and power to score.
Delighted head coach Turner said after the game: “What a performance from the lads, I’m proud of them.
“Our heads could have gone down with 12 men but we showed guts and determination to win.”
The Sharks are now third in the league and travel to East Leeds tomorrow (Sat 2.30pm).
