AFTER TWO years on the sidelines, Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway Club is back and ready to compete against the best.
The revitalised team will compete in the forthcoming Northern Fours tournament against six other northern teams over the next month, starting on October 14 with the first round at Hull.
Team manager Justin Naylor is confident that the Heckmondwike racers can achieve success.
He explained: “We have been steadily increasing our ranks and attracting former riders to regular Saturday morning training sessions at the Firth Park track.
“We are now in a position where we can once again make an impact in regular competition.”
Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway attained notoriety as one of the leading clubs in Great Britain in years gone by.
Along with several league championships, current team captain and England international Darren Kent won many individual honours.
Following the loss of several key members two years ago, the club dropped out of regular competition, but since then Justin and Darren have worked hard to rebuild the team.
Training sessions are held each Saturday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Firth Park, Heckmondwike, and the club say that new members of any age are welcome. The club can even provide bikes and equipment to help new riders start.
Anyone wishing to get into cycle speedway can contact the club on Facebook or call Justin Naylor on 07799 367370.
