Champs Fisher begin with win in HW League

PREMIER DIVISION champions St John Fisher kicked off the new Heavy Woollen Sunday League campaign in style last weekend, starting as they mean to go on with a 2-1 victory over Towngate.

Lee McKeown and Noel Whittaker netted for Fisher, with Nathan Alexander replying for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Birkenshaw edged out Dewsbury Rangers in a thrilling game that finished 5-4.

Joel Farrar and Jonjo Haley each fired doubles for Birkenshaw, Michael Smith bagging the other, while Rangers’replies came courtesy of Ben Mitchell, Michael Thompson, Jordan Pugh and Danny Laidlaw.

Oliver Rounding fired a stunning hat-trick as Mirfield Town won 4-3 at AFC Chickenley.

Sam Raymond hit the other with Tim Clarke (2) and Aaron Dewhirst replying for the hosts.

Andy Godding, Jake Gibson and Adam Bennett all found the net as Overthorpe Sports Club opened up with a 3-2 win over Woodman Batley Carr, who replied through Dominic Karimi and a Neil Pickles penalty.

A Luke Sherman brace was enough for Millbridge WMC to see off the challenge of Thornhill Lees in a 2-1 win, Johnny Walton scoring for the Dewsbury club.

In the Championship, Northorpe United made a flying start with a 9-5 win at FC Pack Horse as Oakwell Motel kicked off with a 6-2 hammering of Gomersal.

St John Fisher Reserves won 5-1 at Barr Street and Battyeford edged Birstall St Patricks 3-2. Taylor FC won 1-0 at Hartshead.

In Division One, Batley Irish Nash are the early pacesetters after a 5-1 success over Bay Horse East Ardsley.

Birkenshaw Reserves with a 5-3 win over Saville Arms, Battyeford Reserves overcame Heckmondwike Sports Club 2-0.

Mount Pleasant were 2-1 victors at Ravenswharfe, as White Horse won 4-2 at Hightown.

In Division Two, new boys Clifton Rangers were top scorers hammering Overthorpe Sports Club Reserves 8-2.

Fellow newcomers Woodkirk Valley also enjoyed their opening fixture, beating Batley Celtics 5-1, and there was further joy for Black Horse who clinched a 3-1 win over St Ignatius.

Punch Bowl blasted Snowdon 5-2 and Kirkheaton began with a 3-1 win over Scholes Athletic.

Town Rangers brushed aside Dewsbury Westside 6-3 in an impressive Division Three opening clash, as Cobras rattled Black Horse 2-1 and Gomersal West beat Hanging Heaton 4-3.
