Central's Warrington gearing up for second title defence alongside former foe

JOSH WARRINGTON is preparing to welcome a former opponent to his Central Boxing Club home as he steps up preparations for the second defence of his English featherweight title.

The Leeds-born 22-year-old, who trains in Batley, will headline a sell-out show next month at Elland Road Pavilion.

And has he enters the final four weeks of his training schedule the nine-stone talent is to be joined in camp by Devon’s Jamie Speight, the man Warrington scored a unanimous points victory over back in March during the first defence of his belt.

‘The Genius’, pictured left alongside Warrington, is gearing up for a Southern Area title clash later this year and Warrington says Speight’s presence can only boost his own preparations.

“Jamie is heading up here for four weeks, he has a big fight coming up,” said Warrington.

“He actually made contact with my father about joining the gym for a period and I believe it can only be a good thing.

“It says a huge amount about where the gym is going when we have fighters wanting to come and train with us for big fights.

“Jamie wants to go far and he sees our setup as the place to be as he prepares for what is a huge opportunity for him.”

Warrington is still awaiting confirmation with regards to an opponent for the September 27 show in Leeds.

Ian Bailey, a Southern Area champion himself, has been touted as a potential challenger.

But Warrington says he is unlikely to be without a name until next week, with the British Board of Control considering a host of potential candidates.

“I should have an opponent in the coming days, hopefully,” added Warrington.

“But it doesn’t really concern me as I am fully focused on myself and what I want to do, which is put on a great show.

“Training is going extremely well and I am very confident of retaining my title. Every defence from here moves me one step closer to bigger and better things, bigger and better titles.”

Tickets are now on sale for ‘Yorkshire's Finest’, which also features Warrington’s stablemate Gary Sykes.

Admission is priced at £30 (general), £50 (ringside) and £70 (VIP ringside).
