World RL talent coming to Dewsbury and Batley

RL Festival - WalesScotland

RUGBY LEAGUE teams from across the globe will be competing in Batley and Dewsbury next month.

The Bulldogs' Mount Pleasant ground and the Rams' Tetley's Stadium play host to international sides from Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Russia, England, Wales, South Africa and Ireland as they contest the Women’s, Student and Police World Cups from July 4 to 14.

The games are part of rugby league's 'Festival of World Cups' event, the first time all of the competitions have been staged together at the same time, ahead of the men's Rugby League World Cup being staged in England and Wales this autumn.

The schedule for the 2013 Student Rugby League World Cup sees Australia, New Zealand, Scotland and Russia drawn in Group A with England, Wales, Ireland and South Africa competing in Group B.

Each nation will play the teams in their pool once, with the top two in each pool progressing to the semi-finals, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will take part in a final grading game after the group stages.

The semi-finals, preceded by the grading games, will take place at the Batley and Dewsbury grounds on Friday July 12.

The women’s tournament opens on Friday July 5 with New Zealand facing France and England taking on Australia at the Tetley's Stadium in Dewsbury.

The final group games will take place at Mount Pleasant, where Australia meet New Zealand and England square off against France on July 11.

The three-team Police World Cup sees world champions Fiji, Australia and host nation Great Britain go head to head in a round-robin format with Great Britain due to play Australia on Friday July 5 at the Tetley’s Stadium.

Dewsbury Rams chairman Mark Sawyer said: “I am very pleased that Dewsbury Rams will be hosting matches from Police, Student and Women’s World Cups. With the town having such a rich rugby league tradition, I am sure that the people of Dewsbury will turn out in force to welcome our guests and witness some tremendous action.”

Batley Bulldogs' community manager Andy Jordan added: “We are very excited to be hosting some of the best young talent in the world from the student game, along with the best female players from around the globe.

“It is a fabulous opportunity for local fans of rugby league to come and see some fantastic games.”

Admission for the Festival of World Cup fixtures at Batley and Dewsbury is £4 for adults and £1 for under-16s on the day of each fixture. Tickets for the fixtures at Dewsbury are also available in advance from Dewsbury Rams.

The Festival of World Cups Finals day takes place at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in Leeds on Sunday July 14.
