Woman rescued after being trapped in canal

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a woman on Tuesday after she fell into a canal at Ravensthorpe and got stuck.

The 20yearold was walking along a footpath off Forge Lane at around 6.40am when the incident occurred.

It is not known how she ended up in the canal or how she became entangled, but a passerby was unable to pull her out. He raised the alarm and fire crews from Dewsbury, Rothwell, Leeds and Brighouse were on the scene in minutes.

They freed her and pulled the woman to safety. She was treated for shock and suspected hypothermia at Dewsbury District Hospital.

Amateur wildlife photographer Fred Wilby was out taking snaps in the area when he came across the scene. He said: “As I came over the bridge, I could hear screaming and what sounded like someone thrashing about in the water. When I got down there a man was trying to help a woman out of the canal after she’d fallen in, but she was stuck. The emergency services did a brilliant job when they arrived. They deserve credit. I hope the woman’s okay now.”
