Walker Welfare demolition still on cards

DEMOLITION of the Walker Welfare Centre is still set to go ahead after council chiefs met Thornhill Lees campaigners last Friday.

The date yet is to be confirmed, leaving hope that funds can be raised for repairs to the Edge Lane building in the meantime.

Coun Masood Ahmed (Lab, Dewsbury South) said Kirklees Council bosses told campaigners they do not have enough money.

He said: “I understand and respect their position. But I’m not happy at all or about how the situation’s been handled from the start.

The Dewsbury Area Committee chairman added: “We could use some of our funds as a starting point while we look for other grants.

“Our budget is about £200,000 a year, and that’s for nine areas. We couldn’t commit all our funds to just one project.”
