Travellers pitch up on playing fields

A GROUP of travellers in around 30 caravans caused chaos in Earlsheaton on Wednesday night when they broke into the Wakefield Road playing fields. Police were called as they blocked the main road. By Thursday morning they had a collection of rugs and a couple of threepiece suites ‘for sale’ by the roadside, being hawked by some entrepreneurial youngsters. Kirklees Council were quick to take enforcement action, serving the travellers with an eviction notice by Thursday lunchtime. They were hoping that a court could hear the case the same afternoon. The visitors were apparently “up from London and just travelling”.
