Towpath trail reveals history of Mirfield

MIRFIELDS history is being brought to life thanks to a new project.

And Mirfield Area Committee has agreed to fund an additional interpretation panel for an historical sculpture trail in the town.

Mills, Mines and Malt is a Heritage Lotteryfunded project run in partnership between Dare 2B Different, Kirklees Duke of Edinburghs Award Trust, the Safe Anchor Trust, Mirfield Historical Society and British Waterways.

Ninety young people have been involved in the project and have been researching the industrial past of Mirfield. They have produced a mural displayed at the Marina Project in Shepley Bridge, a DVD telling the history of Mirfield and two trail leaflets. They also produced seven interpretative sculptures which are now sited along the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge and Newgate in Mirfield.

Area committee chairman Coun Vivien LeesHamilton said: The work of the young people and those at Dare 2B Different really is fantastic. I encourage local people to go for a stroll over Christmas and celebrate their hard work.

The new panel will be situated on the towpath near to Lidl in the town centre.
