Show line-up goes above and beyond

THE LINE-UP for next month’s Mirfield Show has been announced.

The ever-popular family event this year will have two headline acts to entertain the crowds, despite financial constraints caused by shrinking town council grants.

Taking place at the Showground on Sunday August 18, the thousands in attendance will be able to watch Above & Beyond, a visually stunning series of aerial performances including flying trapeze artists, rope, silks, hoops, swinging and acrobatics.

Agricultural entertainer Bob Hogg will also be in the main arena with two highly entertaining displays.

The ‘Lamb National’ will see sheep – with jockeys aboard – raced down a course of brightly-coloured jumps before Bob’s Sheepdog & Ducks becomes the focus of attention.

Children will be invited into the arena while sheepdogs work a group ducks around an obstacle course, down slides and into pools.

Chair of the organising committee Karen Bullivant said: “Times continue to be a financially difficult for many people and therefore we wanted to ensure that the day would be low-cost summer day out with fun for all the family.

“In fact, the entrance for children remains absolutely free, they can watch the main arena entertainment, enter most of the classes and competitions for free – plus you can your own food and enjoy it in our picnic area.

“This year has been financially a little harder as our costs continue to rise – the marquee alone is over £7,000 – but we are determined always to put on a show with entertainment the public are unlikely to have seen locally before.”

Also in the main arena there will be the horse and pony show, the ATC marching band, Panache Cheer School, the Katie Philpott dancers, the children’s fancy dress competition, the Sarah Sutton dancers, children’s races and the Mirfield Show Tug-of-War.

Around the showground there will be a mini-zoo with meerkats, Zorb balls, an under-fives play area, Jersey and Highland cattle, various martial arts, children’s rides, police, fire engine and ambulance displays and much, much more.
