A RUGBY league game with a twist took place to raise funds for an ill youngster.
Thornhill Trojans’ women’s team took on Mirfield Stags’ men’s team in a charity tag match in aid of Zack Barrett.
When Fran Fisher came across the ‘Zack’s Fight’ page on Facebook, she knew she wanted to help. Zack is the five-year-old son of Mirfield couple Katie and Ryan Barrett, who has been diagnosed with an untreatable brain tumour and has been given only 18 months to live.
Fran, a player with Thornhill Trojans Ladies, decided to contact her partner Jonathan Hollings’ old club Mirfield Stags and suggested her team play the men in a charity game. They got together last Saturday to do battle for Zack in a ‘touch and pass’ encounter which raised £265.
“It was a great day. Everyone enjoyed it and they are still talking about it,” said Fran. “We had great support from everyone – three girls even travelled over from Wigan St Pats to help us raise a full team.”
Almost £36,000 of the family’s £100,000 target has been raised to date. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/zack-barrett.
