THE owner of a Ravensthorpe takeaway has been banned from managing any sort of food business after inspectors discovered live cockroaches throughout his premises.
Farhan Ul-Haque, who owns the Hot Grill fast food restaurant on Huddersfield Road, pleaded guilty to five food hygiene offences when he appeared at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court last week.
In May last year food safety inspectors discovered an active cockroach infestation at the premises following a routine visit.
The pests were found on monitor traps in the counter area and also in the cellar, as well as in an insulated food bag. Officers also found egg cases and cockroach body parts. The shop was served with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice and was shut down immediately.
Kirklees decided to prosecute the 47-year-old because of the conditions and the poor track record of the business.
Ul-Haque was fined over £2,200 and prohibited by the court from participating in the management of any food business.
Coun Rob Walker, cabinet member for culture and environment, said: "We will take serious action immediately to deal with such appalling breaches of food hygiene regulations. Whilst we work with business owners to improve their hygiene standards, our key responsibility is to protect the public."
