Pulling days over for Joe

A WELLKNOWN Dewsbury landlord will pull his final pint later this month as he retires after 18 years at the same pub.

Former professional rugby league player Joe Bonnar is leaving The George Hotel in Moor End Lane in Dewsbury Moor to care for his wife Carol, who has suffered a stroke.

Regulars at The George are organising a leaving do for the popular couple, who took on the pub in January 1989 and made it a focal point of the community.

Joe and Carol helped to raise more than £30,000 for various charities over the years and are due to hand over a cheque for over £2,000 to the The Diabetes Appeal at Dewsbury District Hospital before they leave on January 29.

Joe, 58, is originally from Cumbria and moved to the area when Wakefield Trinity bought him from Whitehaven for the princely sum of £3,250.

The nippy scrumhalf finished his career at Halifax aged 29 and worked as a miner and a tradesman before settling on the licensed trade.

"The George has been a great little pub over the years," he said. "We have made so many friends and it is still doing really well, unlike quite a few other places.

"I had originally planned to do another two years but now I have to look after Carol we’ve decided to call it a day a bit sooner.

"We’ve loved being here and we’ve always done well for charities and local groups. The locals have big hearts and it’s been a pleasure to serve them and help out those less fortunate than ourselves."

Joe and Carol are moving to Ullswater Road, Dewsbury, close to Hanging Heaton Golf Club, where Joe is a member.

New owners Punch Taverns already have new tenants lined up for The George.
