Pensioner accidentally stores 1,800 child porn pictures

A PENSIONER from Dewsbury was spared jailed after claiming he downloaded child porn by accident.

Wilfred Batty, 69, visited an adult ‘girlie’ website which had been hacked and indecent images put on it.

Leeds Crown Court heard more than 1,800 explicit pictures ended up on Batty’s laptop. He could not delete them and Batty admitted he ‘foolishly’ looked at them, but claimed he did not get any sexual gratification.

Richard Canning, prosecuting, said police went to his Moorside End home in December 2012.

Batty was traced because though the website was shut down it had kept details of all those who accessed it.

He was found to have 1,257 images at level one, the lowest in the range of seriousness from one to five. He also had 62 at level two, 197 at level three, 361 at level four and eight at level five.

Batty admitted to 21 charges of possessing indecent images and was given a three-year community order.

Khaleeq Zaman, for Batty, said his client had at the time recently bought a laptop but was not good with computers. Others had mentioned ‘girlie’ sites to him and he started looking but the pop-ups then started appearing.

Batty’s sentence includes an activity requirement and a place on a sex offender treatment programme.

Judge James Spencer QC said it was “shameful offending” and added what the victims in the pictures suffered was “beyond imagination.”
