Parents pack out Batley schools inquest

Kirklees Council were opposed to a Batley school’s academy plan, deputy leader Coun Ken Smith told a meeting on Tuesday. Former education chief Coun Smith admitted the authority’s ruling Labour cabinet did not support the switch at Batley Girls’ High.

He was speaking at a packed Batley Town Hall inquest into how a scheme to offer mixedsex secondary places collapsed.

When asked by an angry parent about appealing to education secretary Michael Gove, Coun Smith replied: “I think that might be a good idea.”

• An indepth look at the row will be printed in next week’s Press.
