A KIRKLEES official has held talks with Olympic games bosses over getting next year’s torch relay to pass through Mirfield.
Cabinet member for communities Coun Jean Calvert (Lab) took up the town’s case with staff from London 2012’s organising committee recently.
It came to light when Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) asked Coun Calvert at a council meeting if Kirklees had made contact with Olympic officials.
He said: “We were told the cabinet member had been in discussions with the torch relay team and I am hopeful that those talks succeed.”
Coun Bolt is an advocate of getting the torch procession to come through Mirfield and Kirklees on its way from Manchester to Leeds.
“There is a direct route between the two cities and Mirfield sits on that route with many former Olympians in our community,” he said.
Mirfield’s Harry Crowther, who has the aging disease atypical progeria syndrome, has been nominated as a potential torch bearer.
Coun Bolt added: “Harry strives to live a normal life and copes remarkably. It is a truly Olympian outlook.”
