No sitting on the fence as residents get stuck in...

RESIDENTS joined forces with staff from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) on a voluntary project to improve the appearance of Nussey Avenue on Birstall’s Fieldhead estate. Wooden fences on the street had seen better days and resident Sharon Jackson asked if KNH could do something to spruce them up. The housing organisation, which manages the district’s 23,000 council houses, provided woodstain, brushes, overalls and staff to help with the project. Staff involved in the Fieldhead regeneration project were joined by a dozen residents who together spent nearly four hours painting. Sharon said: “It was brilliant to see so many people out to help. There was a great sense of community spirit, with people of all ages turning out to pick up a paint brush and make a difference. “I’ve had really positive feedback from neighbours and it would be great to see this kind of thing happening on other streets.” Batley and Birstall housing manager Philip Bellinger said: “It was great to see residents and staff working together and getting stuck in. It made a big difference to the area.”
