New rules to prevent repeat of ramp row

COUNCIL chiefs have changed their planning rules to prevent a repeat of Mirfield's continuing Black Bull pub access ramp row.
All nonmaterial amendments must now be cleared by the planning team leader following a campaign by Kirklees and Mirfield's town councillors.
It follows a row over how a disabled access ramp at the former town centre pub was changed from stone to brick without any consultation. Tesco plan to open a store at the Huddersfield Road site, which has sparked protests from residents who feel it is a wholly unsuitable location. The building's owners and Tesco have refused to change the material back or cover the brick with cement render.
Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) said: "It is a great concern to many Mirfield people how a developer can switch key components of an application once it has been approved."
