Mixup gives kids the vote

TWO children from Ravensthorpe nearly became the area's youngest voters after an election polling card mixup.

Amina Hussain, nine, and her brother Ibrahim, six, both got voting slips through the post along with dad Nasir and mum Iffat.

The couple, of The Crescent, applied for ballots for this year's local elections but never expected polling cards for their children.

Amina attends Ravensthorpe Junior School while Ibrahim is at Ravensthorpe Infant and Nursery. The family thought the mixup was hilarious, with their aunt Mussarat Pervaiz adding: “We were gobsmacked, but just laughed. There’s been some sort of human or computer error.”

A council spokesman said: “The parents of Amina and Ibrahim entered their names on an electoral register form sent out last autumn.

“The form clearly states only persons over the age of 16 should be entered and the dates of birth given for 16 and 17 yearolds.

“The council had no reason to believe that the names listed were those of young children.”
