Memorial day for Abigail tops £1,000

A CELEBRATION of the life of a girl from Thornhill raised more than £1,000 last Sunday.

The event at Overthorpe Sports Club was in aid of 12-year-old Abigail Harris, who died in a hit-and-run tragedy in the Canary Islands five years ago. The club hosts an annual fun day in her memory and it gets bigger every year.

There was a bowls competition, face-painting and a hog roast while balloons were released marking what would have been Abigail’s 18th birthday.

Some 38 pairs took part in the bowls and helped raise £1,014, beating last year’s total of £700.

Seven charities including Kirkwood Hospice and Candlelighters benefited.

Even more good causes will be supported this time, though final decisions have not been made.

Abigail’s dad Tony said: “The amount of people who turned up was incredible. I can’t thank them enough.”

• Summer’s Fayre, an annual fundraiser in memory of two-year-old Summer Mai Rogers-Ratcliffe, who died in February 2012, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at Thornhill Trojans ARLFC in Overthorpe Park (noon).
