MAYOR WANTS MORE CYCLE GREENWAY ROUTES

BIKE enthusiast Martyn Bolt wants more cycle routes after cutting the ribbon on one linking Dewsbury and Ossett.

Mayor of Kirklees Coun Bolt is pictured with Wakefield Mayor Brian Holmes on a section of the new greenway at Earlsheaton.

The stretch, using mostly disused railway lines, provides a route for cyclists, walkers and horse riders away from traffic. Sculptures of rugby commentator Eddie Waring, Tour de France great Brian Robinson and disabled athlete David Sykes were also unveiled. Coun Bolt hopes the route can be extended to stretch between Wakefield city centre and Huddersfield.

The Ravensthorpe Cycle club member even wants one from Huddersfield to Leeds which would weave through North Kirklees.

He said: “Huddersfield to Leeds is the busiest transport route in West Yorkshire. We should lobby for increased funds for a greenway.

“It is a commutable distance for cyclists and would lessen congestion on roads and the motorways.

“Hopefully Kirklees Council will support an expansion that will allow the linking of former rail lines into a cohesive network suitable for all.”
