AN ALCOHOLIC with mental health problems attacked two children he plied with booze and cigarettes.
Clerk Appleyard, 52, of Mirfield, admitted two charges of assault following an incident on January 30.
Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard Appleyard punched a girl, 12, in the head and burned her with a cigarette at his Lower Hopton flat.
He then grabbed a 14-year-old boy by his clothes and around his throat.
Laura McBride, prosecuting, said Appleyard would befriend children by offering them alcohol and cigarettes.
The girl stole some cigarettes and the defendant, described as a loner, gave chase. Ms McBride said he punched the girl three times and kicked her. When he grabbed the hood of her coat, a cigarette he had in his hand burned her clothes.
She suffered a cut forehead, bruising and a lump to the back of her head.
Appleyard was told to undergo six months of alcohol treatment as part of a community order.
He must also pay £85 costs, £60 victim surcharge and £75 compensation to the girl.
