WEIGHTLIFTING stalwart Frank Howgate has added another medal to his impressive collection.
The 81-year-old from Dewsbury competed in the recent World Masters Weighlifting Championship in Barcelona, coming second in his category.
Frank, of Scout Hill, travelled to the Catalonian capital with his daughter Lynn and grandson Dylan and, taking part alongside 900 competitors, claimed silver in the M80 94 section.
Last year he was runner-up at the European Masters in Sweden and he’s aiming to travel to Italy to compete again in 2019.
As a youngster Frank, who has lived in Dewsbury all his life, played rugby for Dewsbury Technical and Art College and for Dewsbury RLFC Under-18s. After leaving school he took up weightlifting and had a gym at the YMCA on Leeds Road for a number of years.
He was a physical training instructor in the army and after being demobbed continued his hobby of weightlifting.
Frank worked for many years in Kirklees leisure centres in Dewsbury and Batley and still trains two or three times a week at the Your Fitness gym on Bradford Road, Dewsbury.
Late last month Frank also competed in the Yorkshire Veterans’ Athletic Association Track and Field Championship at Spenborough AC and came second in the shot put.
He said: “I try and eat healthily and do plenty of cardio training. I think I’ve still got a good few years in me yet!”
