LABOUR are responsible for Kirklees Council’s bungled new LDF planning project, a top councillor claims.
Deputy Conservative leader Coun David Hall hit out after Coun Mehboob Khan tried to pin the failure on the Tories.
Kirklees Council have been told by a planning inspector to re-think their draft Local Development Framework (LDF).
Labour and council leader Coun Khan went on the attack, accusing the Tory-led Government of wanting thousands more new homes.
He added: “This also shows up the Kirklees Conservatives for deciding to stick their heads in the sand.
“They refused to engage constructively with the LDF. Had they engaged with the process we could have avoided this unfortunate situation.”
Coun Hall (Liversedge and Gomersal) hit back and said: “The LDF under the Kirklees Labour administration has been a sham from start to finish.
“It is because of their incompetence that significant areas of green belt have come under threat. To blame this fiasco on the Government or the Conservative group on Kirklees Council is beyond belief.”
Fellow Tory Sharon Light, a candidate in the looming Liversedge and Gomersal by-election, believes more land there could now be under threat.
Mrs Light had made the LDF a theme of her campaign before the planning inspector’s report on the Kirklees scheme was revealed.
She said: “I’m worried that Kirklees producing a revised LDF that includes more houses will impact significantly on Liversedge and Gomersal.
“The previous plans included a major housing development on the Barley Fields in Gomersal.
“We must fight to stop this area again becoming part of a plan to annihilate the Green Belt in North Kirklees.”
