MIRFIELD could become the first town in West Yorkshire to officially support the 'Heroes Welcome' campaign.
This week Mirfield Town Council agreed to begin the process of signing up to the Heroes Welcome scheme, which shows support for local Armed Forces communities and veterans in a practical way.
If the bid is completed, traders and businesses in Mirfield will be encouraged to display the Heroes Welcome logo in their window, which shows support for British military personnel and their families and indicates a warm welcome, special acknowledgement, a service upgrade or even a discount as appropriate.
The campaign was launched in 2008 by Scarborough businessman – and former TA officer John Senior and has now spread to many parts of the country.
Mirfield, which became the first Fairtrade town in Kirklees in 2005, could also have signs erected on the approaches to the town signifying its Heroes Welcome credentials. York is the nearest town or city which is a member of the scheme.
Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) fully backs the campaign and said: “It recognises the hard work and sacrifice our military personnel and their families, and it's an opportunity for local businesses and organisations to give something to show that they appreciate what they do on our behalf.”
