Funding boost for local groups

COMMUNITY groups in a deprived part of Dewsbury can apply for grants of up £2,500 following a successful charity funding bid.
Coun Darren O’Donovan (Lab, Dewsbury West) helped secure a pot of more than £50,000 from the Community Development Foundation.
Groups across Coun O’Donovan’s ward, such as youth projects, will be able to apply for grants starting from £500 up to the year 2014.
The Community Development Foundation recently made £30m available for schemes in the poorest parts of the country.
Dewsbury West has some of the most deprived communities in Kirklees in areas such as Dewsbury Moor and Ravensthorpe.
Coun O’Donovan, working with Kirklees Council officials, secured £50,865 for Dewsbury West. The grants will work on a ‘matched funding’ basis.
He said: “It’s an enormous boost for Dewsbury West. We’ve been working hard over the past few months to secure this funding.
“We’ve now set up a panel to see the money is put to good use. Things are finally on the up for Dewsbury West.”
