Eid events will raise quake funds

TWO Batley community groups have organised a charity Eid celebration to raise funds for a new school in earthquake ravaged Kashmir.
Members of the Kirklees Women’s Alliance and the Pakistan and Kashmir Welfare Association (PKWA) are to host the event on October 24.
It is due to be held in the PKWA centre off Manor Way in Staincliffe from 6pm and features live Indian music plus a seven course meal.
The cash raised is to go to the Kashmir Earthquake Relief Fund, a Sheffieldbased charity which is helping to rebuild a girls’ school.
An earthquake destroyed the Bagh Girls’ College, which was the only one in Kashmir for women aged 16 to 19, five years ago today (Friday).
Some 300 pupils and staff were crushed to death when the building collapsed while more than 85,000 people died in the earthquake.
Students are still being taught in tents around various hill villages as Kashmir’s reconstruction has been slow.
It is hoped the Batley fundraiser will generate enough cash to help complete a new building which was first started in April 2007.
Kirklees Council are backing the event and tickets are available from the PKWA by calling 01924 422 786 or from Habiban Zaman on 07854 128150.
