Driver dragged from car and beaten by gang wielding baseball bats

A MAN was seriously injured when he was dragged from his car in broad daylight and attacked with baseball bats.

Roads in Dewsbury town centre were sealed off on Wednesday morning following reports of a serious assault.

Police confirmed they were called to Wellington Street, opposite the town’s railway station, after being informed of someone being attacked by a group of men with weapons at around 10am. The suspects fled the scene in a grey car.

The victim was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Photos from the scene show the windows of a black BMW smashed.

A taxi driver who was caught up in the scene has spoken about how the ordeal unfolded in front of him.

Hassan Ahmed, 66, said: “I was waiting at the give way and a BMW shunted into my car after it was hit from behind by a VW Passat.Ash Milnes 2

“The men from the Passat then got out and dragged the driver of the BMW into the road. They all had baseball bats and started hitting him all over.

“He managed to get up and ran away but only managed to get a short distance as they chased him and again struck him.

“He was bleeding on the ground and people were starting to notice what was going on.

“Then the men got back in the Passat, which was quite badly damaged, and fled.”

Enquiries are ongoing and any witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting log 431 of Wednesday, March 22.
