DEWSBURY’S sporting heroes were back in town last Saturday as hundreds of people joined them to celebrate the district’s first-ever Rugby League Day.
The 1973 Dewsbury RLFC championship-winning side were re-presented with the trophy on the town hall steps, 40 years after their historic victory, by Kirklees Mayor Martyn Bolt.
Organised by Dewsbury Town Team, the rugby-themed fun day has been hailed as a huge success.
The formal presentation on the town hall steps also saw a performance by the Dewsbury Rams Panache cheerleading squad, a haka dance by local schoolchildren and a 1973 ‘re-match’ between Leeds and Dewsbury team mascots Roger Ram and Ronnie Rhino.
Members of the original Dewsbury squad also watched their historic victory during a special screening of the game at the New Picture House.
