TWO church stalwarts will cycle a gruelling 130 miles from Whitby Abbey to Mirfield to raise cash for their parish.
Chris Barker, above left, and Stephen Butler, of Mirfield Team Parish, set off on Saturday July 9 and will ride back via the ancient abbeys of North and West Yorkshire to Mirfield – in 12 hours.
The pair are retracing the steps of an original ‘Abbey Run’ they completed 29 years ago, when Chris ran the route and was joined by Mirfield scouts along the way, including a much younger Stephen Butler. An astounding £2,000 was then raised for church funds.
Members of several local cycling clubs will be joining Chris and Stephen along the route, including Mirfield councillor Martyn Bolt.
In the evening they will be welcomed at St Mary’s Church by family, friends and supporters at a special fun day to celebrate their achievement.
The evening will culminate in a ceilidh in the Parish Centre at 7.30pm, where hopefully Chris and Stephen will have recovered sufficiently to recount the highs and lows of their journey.
