Councillor's warning over voter registration scam

RESIDENTS should not sign up with firms offering paid-for voter registration services, a Cleckheaton councillor has warned.

Coun Andrew Pinnock spoke out after it was alleged an unnamed firm is charging people in the town £30 to put them on the electoral roll.

The Lib Dem veteran said the firm also uses a £1.53-a-minute premium rate number to take customer questions.

He pointed out registering to vote is both free and can be done easily online or through a freephone number.

Coun Pinnock accused the firm of a mounting cynical con and added: “This company has been set up purely to take advantage of people.

“It’s very easy to register to vote. People can do it themselves for nothing. I don’t want anyone one to end up out of pocket.”

The Electoral Commission, the UK elections watchdog, is also urging people not to use any paid-for service to register to vote.

People can register to vote for free on www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, 08003 280280 or the Kirklees Council Election Office on 01484 222400 or at www.kirklees.gov.uk/elections.
