Councillors settle for another pay freeze

Councillors have agreed to accept a pay freeze. All 69 members of the Huddersfield-based Kirklees authority will receive basic allowances of £12,566, plus extras for other duties, for the 2013-14 financial year.

Coun Mehboob Khan (Lab) gets an additional £25,155 for his role as council leader. Deputy leader Coun David Sheard gets an extra £18,866.

Cabinet members, including Batley West’s Coun Shabir Pandor, receive £12,274 on top of their basic allowance.

Party leaders, such as Tory chief Coun Robert Light and Lib Dem boss Coun Kath Pinnock, will be paid an extra £9,820.

The pay scales are set by an independent review panel. The last time councillors got a wage rise was in 2009/10.
