Boarders devastated after vandals’ attack

SKATEBOARDERS in Mirfield are devastated after vandals set fire to their facilities.

The main concrete skateboarding bowl in Knowl Park is now cracked and unsafe following the blaze.

Vandals also left shards of glass from broken bottles everywhere and poured oil over nearby footpaths and ramps.

Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton (Con, Mirfield) said: “I’m absolutely incandescent with rage about this.

“The culprits are mindless morons who have spoiled the skate park for everyone who enjoys it.

“Not only that, but the broken glass and oil made paths dangerous for people walking through the park.”

Kirklees Council’s Mirfield Area Committee poured thousands into the skate park after a campaign by youngsters.

A survey three years ago highlighted a lack of leisure facilities for 12 to 16-year-olds, with a skate park top of the wanted list.

It proved a hit, with users, including the original campaigners, said to be devastated about the vandalism.

Coun Lees-Hamilton, also a town councillor and the Mayor of Mirfield, said funding repairs might be difficult.

She said: “It’s likely to be expensive. We’ll have to see what can be done through the area committee.

“The skateboarders are all good lads. It’d be a shame of they had to suffer because of the irresponsibility of morons.”
