Coun Ahmed demands answers over welfare centre

A COUNCILLOR has demanded answers over the Walker Welfare Centre demolition fiasco in Thornhill.

Coun Masood Ahmed (Lab, Dewsbury South) said he had asked Kirklees Council chief executive Adrian Lythgo to investigate.

He added he has also lobbied the authority’s leader and deputy leader, Coun Mehboob Khan and Coun David Sheard.

Coun Ahmed insists neither he nor the ward’s two other councillors were told of the proposed demolition.

“I just want answers,” Coun Ahmed said.

“I’ve taken my concerns to the council leadership and the chief executive.

“They know I’m not happy about what’s happened. I’ll keep banging at their doors until we get some answers.”

Coun Ahmed added he did not want to see the Edge Lane building demolished and said: “I’ll do whatever I can.

“There’s a lot of support for saving the centre and it comes not just in the community but from outside as well.

“I’ve been getting messages from people who used to live in the area. It’s a much-loved building with a lot of history.”
