Action needed to halt speeding in Birkenshaw

A COUNCILLOR has demanded action after it was revealed some drivers do more than 80mph on Birkenshaw’s Whitehall Road.

Coun Andrew Palfreeman (Con, Birstall and Birkenshaw) spoke out after 3,500 motorists a day were found breaking the road's 30mph limit.

The figures came from traffic sensors which recorded vehicle movement between October last year and June.

Coun Palfreeman said: “To drive at more than 80mph in a residential area is irresponsible and, quite frankly, potentially murderous. The ridiculous situation is we need some of our constituents to be killed or seriously injured before permanent speed cameras are considered.

“Irrespective of that we will be asking the police to enforce the speed limit and campaigning for cameras.”
