Issue 772

THIS week in The Press, a woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Gomersal.

Michelle Spencer, 47, was due at Leeds Crown Court today (Thursday) accused of killing David Butterfield at a home on Shirley Terrace.

A couple have been banned from keeping equines for life after pleading guilty to a string of animal cruelty offences, and Dewsbury Hospital has come under more pressure after it was revealed that large numbers of patients were forced to wait more than 30 minutes to be admitted after they were taken there by ambulance.

Two council workers and a dad-to-be have been hailed as heroes after helping to rescue two people from a flat fire in Birstall, and a Kirklees councillor has left the Labour Party following her suspension last year.

In sport this week, Batley Bulldogs are preparing for the visit of Keighley Cougars in what will be their second pre-season outing of the winter.

Meanwhile at Dewsbury Rams, Kyle Trout has left to join Sheffeld Eagles on a one-year contract.

The move came after Glenn Morrison's side lost their third consecutive pre-season outing last weekend, at the hands of touring aboriginal side The Yowies.

In the amateur ranks Shaw Cross Sharks came off second best against Wests Warriors in the inaugural Kevin Squires Memorial Trophy.

And Liversedge FC's second-half domination ensured they ran out 5-2 winners in their latest NCEL Premier Division clash.
