This week in The Press, read about proposals to introduce ID checks at polling stations in our district.

The government has identified Kirklees as one of 18 council areas across the country most susceptible to voter fraud.

However the proposals have been met with a mixed reaction from local politicians.

Also, Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust have moved to quash rumours that people have to pay to use the new Bronte Birth Centre at Dewsbury Hospital, Kirklees Council leader David Sheard has said that a debate should be had regarding the potential sale of a painting worth millions of pounds currently in their possession, and we take a look back at the year in our 2016 review.

In sport this week, Matt Diskin won his first game in charge of Batley Bulldogs in the 2016 Boxing Day Challenge.

Dewsbury lost full-back Josh Guzdek to a knee injury in the game and the club are still waiting for news on the extent of the problem.

Meanwhile Cleckheaton lost their annual Boxing Day battle with Old Brodleians and Liversedge FC drew with Athersley Recreation in the Northern Counties East League Premier.

It's all in The Press - happy new year to all our readers!
