In The Press this week: Ousted Kirklees Council leader David Sheard is back in the top job after weeks of political wrangling was dramatically ended in the wake of Jo Cox's death.

On Wednesday councillors held their first full meeting since she died - one that had been pencilled in for a potentially fractious leadership debate.

But in a show of unity amid emotional tributes to Mrs Cox members returned Heckmondwike Labour veteran Coun Sheard as council leader six weeks after he was axed in an apparent party coup.

Batley West councillor Shabir Pandor was named deputy council leader while Dewsbury South representative Coun Masood Ahmed joins the cabinet as schools chief.

In other news we look at how Birstall is coping in the aftermath of Mrs Cox's death, with exclusive stories featuring chamber of trade chairman Anne Thompson and the now well-known Rev Paul Knight.

We look at what impact the EU referendum vote will mean for residents - with claim and counter claim about the future of public services and regeneration schemes.

There were two leaflet controversies, one capitalising on the death of Jo Cox which the British National Party denied, and the other at a polling station for the EU referendum last week.

A parent has criticised reduced playtimes and lunchtimes at a Dewsbury primary that will see the school day end half an hour earlier from September.

And discover Spen Valley's part in football folklore.

In sport this week, Batley boss John Kear has warned his side that their clash with Whitehaven on Saturday could be 'very tricky'.

Meanwhile Brad Day, Wayne Reittie and Alistair Leak have all signed contract extensions keeping them at Mount Pleasant until the end of the 2018 season.

Elsewhere Bobbie Goulding is expected to make his second debut for Dewsbury Rams against London Broncos on Sunday having previously played for Glenn Morrison's side back in 2013.

In the National Conference League Shaw Cross Sharks managed a win in Division one, as did Dewsbury Moor in the third tier, but in Division Two both Dewsbury Celtic and Thornhill Trojans fell to disappointing defeats.

And Mirfield Stags have appointed Francis Maloney as successor to Richard Silverwood who stood down as coach to concentrate on his Super League refereeing career.
