Issue 705

IN The Press this week we look into the reasons why a high-profile Dewsbury councillor has been dumped as a candidate for next year's elections.

Coun Karen Rowling was de-selected by members of her own Dewsbury West Labour branch at a meeting last Thursday.

Our probe saw claim and counter claim about a rumpus which was said by Coun Rowling to have been brewing for at least the last 18 months.

Read Danny Lockwood's own inimitable take on the controversy in Ed Lines.

Elsewhere, a hunt for a suspected gunman is continuing after a shooting in Batley on Monday night.

Police released without charge a 19-year-old man arrested the following day and have eliminated him for their enquiries.

It comes after a shooting on Caledonia Road, near the BP petrol station.

We reveal a seven-day strike by medical laboratory assistants at Dewsbury District Hospital is due to start on Tuesday.

Bosses at a bed-manufacturing firm with bases in Ravensthorpe and Batley face human trafficking charges in court.

Discover why a proposed permanent gipsy site in Birstall may stir bad memories for travellers.

And read about the life of volunteering which sees Batley Carr activist honoured at the House of Lords today (Fri).

In sport, Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs have continued their recruitment drives.

The Rams have signed Josh Gudzek from Hull Kingston Rovers and Paul Sykes from Featherstone while the Bulldogs have captured the Sheffield Eagles trio of Dominic Brambani, Pat Walker and James Davey.

In National Conference League Division One Shaw Cross Sharks are attempting to hold on to their play-off spot with a win against Salford City Roosters on October 17.

And in NCL Division Three the Trojans have played the final game of their promotion campaign, losing out to Leeds side Stanningley 35-22 in a fiery encounter.

In rugby union Cleckheaton bagged their first win of the season against fellow strugglers Burnage 44-20.

In swimming, Kirklees Active Leisure are trying to get more youngsters to follow in the footsteps of Dewsbury sensation Kyle Chisholm.

The 18-year-old won five medals at the Youth Commenwealth games in Samoa and in June won two siver medals at the European Games.

It's all in The Press, the only newspaper that has North Kirklees covered.
