A MOTORIST who led police on a 90mph chase in a hire car has been jailed.
Mohammad Jahngir, 23, of Myrtle Road, Ravensthorpe, feared he may have been over the alcohol limit and panicked when he saw police. Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard officers spotted Jahngir at around 3am on July 13 in Huddersfield.
The father-of-two Jahngir sped towards Brighouse, running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road.
He carried on despite hitting a road sign but eventually dumped the Mercedes and fled. Jahngir, who had hired the car as somewhere to sleep after a row with his partner, had consumed just one vodka and Red Bull.
He was driving home two friends, whom he abandoned in the car when he fled, after a night out.
Zahid Majeed, mitigating, said: “He’s extremely remorseful and made a mistake in not stopping when the officers signalled him to do so.”
Jahngir, who admitted dangerous driving, was jailed for 26 weeks and banned from the road for two years.
District Judge Michael Fanning told Jahngir: “You went through red lights not pausing to think about people crossing on the junction.
“You reached ... 90mph on 40mph roads when the roads were wet. This is such a crass piece of dangerous driving.”
